Abrams Had a Relevant Lineage in Mind for Rey

Actor Simon Pegg revealed that J.J. Abrams originally had much grander plans for Rey’s lineage in the new Star Wars trilogy.

“Well I know what J.J. kind of intended, or at least what was sort of being chucked around,” Pegg told the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by [The Last Jedi]. I don’t know. I don’t know. [laughs] I think Unkar Plutt is Rey’s real father.”

“There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her,” Pegg continued. “But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows. We shall see.”

Pegg is, of course, joking about Unkar Plutt — the junk boss he played in The Force Awakens — being the character’s father. However, the revelation that Abrams had different intentions for Rey’s parents is certain to cause some fans to wonder who Abrams had in mind in his original script for Episode VIII, especially since The Last Jedi revealed that they were “nobody.”

In September, Abrams returned to write and direct Episode IX following the departure of Colin Trevorrow. In addition to working with Pegg on The Force Awakens, Abrams also worked with the actor on the rebooted Star Trek film series.

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi is available now on streaming platforms, Blu-ray and 4k HD. The film stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo and the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa.
