Early box office returns suggest that Ant-Man and The Wasp might open even better than initially expected, as their Thursday previews box office numbers passed Doctor Strange‘s Thursday previews box office from November 2016.
Deadline reports that Ant-Man and The Wasp is estimated to have earned more than $11 million in Thursday night previews ahead of the nationwide release today. That is noticeably higher than Doctor Strange‘s $9.4 million on its bow. Also, these are just early estimates, and some think that there is a chance that it might end up as high as $13 million once the Thursday receipts are counted.

This is a much higher result than 2015’s Ant-Man, which took in almost half as much money on its Thursday preview night, with $6.4 million. The original Ant-Man ended up bringing in $55 million on its opening weekend. Doctor Strange, meanwhile, took home $85 million on its opening weekend.

With these new box office numbers, it appears that Ant-Man and The Wasp is on pace to pass Doctor Strange and might end up closer to the opening weekend of the original Guardians of the Galaxy, which netted $94.3 million back in 2014. With Marvel Studios films already taken in over $6 billion at the box office in 2018, a better-than-expected box office return from Ant-Man and the Wasp would be an embarrassment of riches.
In theaters now, director Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and The Wasp stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Judy Greer, David Dastmalchian, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, Hannah John-Kamen, Randall Park and Walton Goggins.
