Ant-Man & The Wasp Rules Box Office, The First Purge Does as Expected

While Ant-Man and the Wasp failed to live up to estimates this weekend, the film still took the top place at the box office, while The First Purge took second place.

Box office estimates are in and Marvel Studios officially has its twentieth straight number one film with Ant-Man and the Wasp, as the film opened with an impressive $76 million stateside. That, of course, is down from the $83 million opening that many had expected. However, that’s still 33% bigger than Ant-Man‘s $57.2 million opening back in 2015. As for The First Purge, which is the fourth outing in the franchise, the film took in $17.2 million over the weekend, bringing its five day total — as the film opened on July 4th — to $31.1 million.

Although Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s numbers are nowhere near as impressive as those of both Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, which both exceeded expectations earlier this year, the sequel did manage to improve upon its predecessor. Unfortunately, the film also saw a steep 30 percent decline from Friday to Saturday, explaining the lowered opening weekend estimate. Still, Ant-Man and the Wasp looks to be off to a good start as the film is pacing 45 percent ahead of its predecessor intentionally, taking in $85 million overseas, with a fair amount of international markets yet to open. As it stands, the film is currently looking at a $161 million global opening. Those numbers, of course, could shift again once final numbers are tallied tomorrow.

For Disney, Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is the third Marvel Studios film to open in first place this year, gives the company five of the seven biggest openings of the year to date. Even more impressive? As of this weekend, Incredibles 2 is now the top-grossing animated film of all time — not adjusted for inflation — having surpassed fellow Pixar film, Finding Dory, with $503 million.
