Aquaman Concept Art Shows Atlanteans Riding Great White Sharks

Movies

The armies of Atlantis face off against the forces of Xebel in new concept art from Aquaman that offers the best look yet at the film’s underwater world.

The Atlantean warriors are mounted on great white sharks, led by King Orm (Patrick Wilson) on an enormous tylosaur and Vulko (Willem Dafoe) on a giant black hammerhead shark, while King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren) and his soldiers are carried by fierce sea dragons, director James Wan’s nod to Aquaman’s trusty seahorse Storm.

The accompanying article from Entertainment Weekly also confirms the film will borrow from more recent DC canon, in which there were seven ancient kingdoms of Atlantis. Although in the comic books four of those kingdoms were destroyed when Atlantis sank centuries ago, leaving only Xebel, the Trench and Atlantis, EW states that, in the film, the split came after the catastrophe.

The outlet also unveiled concept art of the ruins of the Council of the Kings, located on the outskirts of Atlantis, which includes enormous statues, each representing on the original seven kings. That, too, borrows from the comics, as the page from 2013’s Aquaman #25 (below) shows.

Aquaman star Jason Momoa made a reference to “seven different kingdoms” as far back as November, but this concept art and companion text obviously confirm that the “Unite the Seven” tagline had nothing to do with Justice League and everything to do with Atlantis.
