Aquaman & Mera Are On the Hunt For a Relic in New Movie Image

The last DC Extended Universe that was released was Justice League, which released in November 2017. It’s been a long time, but now here we are, almost a year later, and director James Wan’s Aquaman is almost upon us. In Zack Snyder’s superhero team-up film, we saw Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) come to grasp with his Atlantean heritage. After spending a lifetime of living on the fringes of the surface world and the kingdom of Atlantis, the character finally embraced his birthright and put on the armor of a king to help protect the world from the forces of Apokolips.

Justice League ended with Arthur ready for a new beginning as protector of the Seven Seas. However, as we saw from the first trailer of the film, the Aquaman may be heading for Atlantis, but he will not exactly be welcomed with open arms. His half-brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson) currently sits on the throne of the underwater kingdom, and the villain will fight with everything he has to stay in power.

Therefore, it’s up to the duo of Aquaman and Mera (Amber Heard) to find a way for Arthur to defeat his brother and become the rightful ruler of Atlantis. James Wan has previously said that part of the film would see the two characters embark on a landlocked adventure inspired by the likes of the 1984 film, Romancing The Stone. Now thanks, to a new image from the film courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we finally get an idea of what the two characters are after.

The image features both Arthur and Mera staring at some sort of relic that appears to be the key to activating an ancient Atlantean machine. It’s unclear yet what the purpose of this machine is, but given that its blue glow ties it directly to Atlantis, it’s clear that it will be crucial in their mission to overthrow King Orm.

Whatever Mera and Aquaman are after, we already know from the first trailer of the film that the villainous Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is also after them — or this very machine. All will finally be revealed when Aquaman is finally released at the end of the year.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, and Dolph Lundgren as Nereus. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 21.
