Marvel Studios’ Black Panther has managed to hit yet another record after retaining its first place at the box office for five consecutive weekends — something that no other film has achieved since Avatar. Unfortunately for Warner Bros. and its attempt at reviving the Tomb Rider franchise, though, this means their feature opened in second place with a less than stellar $23.5 million.

Black Panther continues to amaze at the box office. In its fifth weekend in release stateside, the film has earned another $27 million this weekend, allowing the film to retain its top spot at the box office yet again. Even more impressive is that the film has also crossed the $600 million mark domestically and looks likely to surpass The Avengers‘ $623 million domestic haul to become the biggest superhero flick of all time in North America. Black Panther‘s worldwide total currently sits at $1.1 billion. With the film stumbling in its second weekend in China, a $1.3 billion finish seems probable now, which is still an incredible feat for a first film in a franchise.

As for Tomb Raider, a sequel currently seems unlikely given the film’s soft opening, however, word of mouth could surprise. While reactions have been mixed, the film could go on to surprise and have legs at the box office. As it stands, though, it seems unlikely the film will hit $100 million domestically, especially with Pacific Rim: Uprising — which looks likely to finally unseat Black Panther next weekend — and Ready Player One on the horizon.
