Independence Day marked a huge milestone for Captain America, who turned 100. To celebrate the auspicious occasion, Marvel Cinematic Universe favorite Chris Evans offered his own salute to Steve Rogers.

Steve Rogers’ birthday is confirmed in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, when he enlists in the Army, but is dismissed as being too sickly. His medical records indicate his birth date is July 4, 1918.

Rolling out the stars and stripes, Evans tweeted a message to his followers: “Happy 4th everyone!! I love this country and I’m proud of how far we’ve come. Be safe today!” He then went on to send a special message to Captain America: “Also, Happy Birthday to a very good friend of mine. I hear 100 is the new 20.”

While Evans was celebrating Captain America’s centenary, the site noted that The First Avenger might not be totally accurate. According to 1991’s The Adventures of Captain America #1, Steve Rogers was born on July 4, 1917, which would make him 101. Elsewhere, the year of his birth has been listed as 1920. However, the day remains the same: the Fourth of July.

Evans is a staple of the MCU, across the three Captain America movies and the Avengers franchise, as well as cameos in Thor: The Dark World and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Although Evans is reportedly finished with the role following reshoots of Avengers 4, there is at least one more movie for the star to fly the flag high as Steve Rogers.
