While the hype for Deadpool 2 is increasing, fans do have an eye on another superhero-action film that 20th Century Fox is building towards: X-Force. At the world premiere of the sequel for the Merc with a Mouth, director David Leitch made it abundantly clear that things are proceeding as planned, and that director Drew Goddard is ready to bring the mutant covert-ops team to life.

“They’ve been developing it for awhile, and Drew Goddard is on-board,” he said in an update to Variety. “He’s a great writer and a great filmmaker. I think they’re really trying to take these characters and expand this universe.”

Leitch’s sequel gets first crack at the team though, with Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson recruiting a ragtag band of mutants as his version of X-Force, all in order to fight off the threat of the time-traveling mutant, Cable (Josh Brolin).

It’s no secret that one of Deadpool’s teammates, Domino (Zazi Beetz), as well as Cable, will be joining him for Goddard’s movie in a plot that’s unknown at the moment. “With those people all creatively involved, and Josh and Zazi’s characters all coming back, I think it would be fun for everybody,” Leitch added.

Reynolds himself has expressed excitement at the job ahead. “I just wanna work with Drew,” the actor added. “I mean, I love him and he has such an interesting take on where he wants to take that world. I see it being a real ensemble on a lot of levels just because I think it’s interesting for Deadpool to kinda function in the way he does in his own universe.”

Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 features Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Karan Soni as Dopinder, with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable, Julian Dennison in an unknown role, and Jack Kesy as a villain widely thought to be Black Tom Cassidy. The film hits theaters on May 18.
