Ethan Hawke Says Logan Was a Fine (Not Great) Superhero Movie

In an interview earlier this week, Ethan Hawke shared his thoughts on Logan, which is touted by many — particularly comic fans — as a modern movie masterpiece.

Hawke was at the Locarno Film Festival when he gave his opinion on the final installment in Hugh Jackman’s solo Wolverine trilogy, which he called great for a superhero movie, but not great or outstanding in terms of cinema in general.

Calling the classification of Logan as a great movie a problem, Hawke stated, “Well, it’s a great superhero movie. It still involves people in tights with metal coming out of their hands.”

Even though there weren’t many tights worn in Logan, Hawke still contrasted the film with European art cinema from ages ago. “It’s not Bresson,” he said. “It’s not Bergman. But they talk about it like it is.” Robert Bresson and Ingmar Bergman are two of the most celebrated European auteurs of all time, known for their black-and-white films and alterations of narrative structure.

Reflecting on his own experience with James Mangold’s film, Hawke said the following, “I went to see Logan cause everyone was like, ‘This is a great movie’ and I was like, ‘Really? No, this is a fine superhero movie.'”

Hawke claims the perception of Logan stems from the business side of the movie industry. “There’s a difference but big business doesn’t think there’s a difference,” he said. “Big business wants you to think that this is a great film because they wanna make money off of it.”

Logan stars Hugh Jackman as Logan, Patrick Stewart as Charles, Dafne Keen as Laura, Boyd Holbrook as Pierce and Stephen Merchant as Caliban.
