Fox Is Pushing Ahead With X-Men Films Amid Disney Deal

Although Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s key assets is expected to be complete by mid-2019, work progresses on the company’s hit X-Men franchise, with Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants set for release next year. However, Fox isn’t letting letting up on other films in the development pipeline.

Veteran franchise producer Simon Kinberg, who also wrote and directed Dark Phoenix, confirmed Fox is moving ahead on such X-Men spinoffs as the previously announced X-Force, Multiple Man and Gambit, the latter of which has experienced a long, troubled development.

“Gambit has a great script and we’re looking to start that movie early next year,” he told IGN. “Multiple Man, that script’s being worked on right now,” Kinberg said, adding that the Deadpool 2 spinoff X-Force is only waiting for the release next month of Drew Goddard’s Bad Times at the El Royale, so the filmmaker can turn his attention to the script.

Disney previously signaled its intention to release every Fox film completed or in production by the time the acquisition is finalized. However, the entertainment conglomerate is expected to scale back production on pricier projects and those that don’t fit into the company’s family- and franchise-friendly formula.

Delayed multiple times, as it moved from one director to the next, Gambit no longer has an release date, but, as Kinberg indicated, the hope is to begin production next year.
