Gargoyles Takes Flight Again in This Impressive Fan Film

TV

A new fan film explores what a live-action version of the beloved 1990s Gargoyles animated series might look like.

The video, which starts by duplicating some of the scenes from the Disney cartoon’s original opening, shows someone on a motorbike causing destruction in New York. “They don’t bring terror. They don’t bring chaos to our modern world,” the voiceover says of the titular Gargoyles. “They bring hope and order to the darkness of this city.”

The video then shows Goliath, the leader of the Manhattan Clan, stop the driver and features what seems to be a quick appearance from NYPD detective Elisa Maza at the end. “They see the good in us,” the voiceover says. “It may be time we see the good in them.”

Co-created by Greg Weisman (who went on to co-create Young Justice), Gargoyles focused on a clan of mystical gargoyles that turned to stone during the day, but came to life at night. After billionaire David Xanatos relocates the Gargoyles’ medieval Scottish castle to New York, the clan must adjust to modern living, aided by intrepid NYPD detective Elisa Maza, while clashing with Xanatos.

Due to major production team changes, the show’s final season proved controversial. Weisman went on to write a Gargoyles comic book series that ignored the third season, instead choosing to pick up from the end of the second and tell a new story in its place. Slave Labor Graphics published those comics from 2005 to 2009, until increasing licensing fees from Disney forced it to abandon the project.
