The first images from Michael Dougherty’s upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters were released today. The images come with additional details about the film’s trio of massive monsters, which includes not only Godzilla, but also fan-favorites Rodan and King Ghidorah.

Dougherty also revealed more details on what has been going in the world of King of the Monsters since 2014’s Godzilla, which reintroduced Western audiences to the massive lizard that protects and destroys in turn.

“The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting,” Dougherty said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “but there’s paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we’re threatened by others like his kind.”

The new photos certainly make Godzilla out to be a threat, as one depicts the giant lizard effectively trying to light the sky on fire with his atomic breath. That wasn’t the only first look picture released today, though. Dougherty’s interview also got into the relationship between and perils faced by Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown’s characters.

Farmiga’s Dr. Emma Russell is a scientist working for Monarch, the monster-hunting organization that has acted as the connective thread from Godzilla to Kong: Skull Island. Her occupation comes with its hazards, naturally, as she and her daughter are kidnapped by a rival organization with their own plans for the monsters.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is directed by Michael Dougherty and stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi. It is scheduled to open on May 31, 2019.
