Gotham Set Designer Teases a New Batcave for Season 5

The final season of Fox’s Gotham is poised to introduce a new version of the iconic Batcave.

With the first four seasons of the superhero prequel show building toward the dark events of Season 5, fans will finally see David Mazouz’s young Bruce Wayne accept his destiny and become Batman. Season 4 introduced a prototype Batmobile (actually a Ford Mustang), so why shouldn’t Season 5 give the young vigilante a fitting secret lair?

Posting a diagram on Instagram, Gotham set designer Jonathan Collins joked, “When your old cave is too small for your new cave.” The image depicts the entrance to the Batcave, and a tunnel leading underground. As Gotham promises to finally use the word Batman in its final season, the producers are going all out to bring the remaining bits of the Caped Crusader’s lore to the series.

Longtime viewers may remember a pseudo-Batcave was teased in the Season 1 finale, and then featured sporadically in Season 2. The not-Batcave was a secret room beneath Wayne Manor that belonged to Bruce’s late father, Thomas Wayne. Whether Bruce and Alfred Pennyworth are remodeling the existing space or searching for somewhere new, it looks like bigger will be better in Season 5.

With Gotham left rocked by the Joker’s plan to level the city at the end of Season 4, the “No Man’s Land” will see various criminals fight for control. Now that Bruce is tipped to take on the mantle of Batman, he needs a well-fortified Batcave as his base of operations.

With executive producer John Stephens confirming that Gotham will also adapt Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV “Zero Year” from DC comics, it makes sense that a new Batcave should be introduced to the show.

From the campy Adam West series to the video game Arkhamverse to Christopher Nolan’s more serious take, audiences have seen plenty of imaginative Batcaves over the decades. But Collins’ is merely teasing Gotham fans, who will have to wait a little longer to see this Batcave in action.

Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth. The series is expected to return for its fifth and final season in January 2019.
