Hellboy Reboot Arrives With NYCC-Exclusive Footage

Movies

Footage for director Neil Marshall’s upcoming Hellboy reboot debuted at New York Comic Con, and, although it’s an NYCC exclusive, we’ve got a description of the footage.

According to those at NYCC, the footage features a lot of dark humor and is set to Billy Idol’s “Mony Mony.” The video itself starts with two people walking around in a cavern, and features a voiceover from Ian McShane’s Trevor Bruttenholm, who says, “If there is ever an end in this forever war, it will be because of you and your strong right hand.” The footage, which is reportedly quite gory and bloody, then cuts to Hellboy jumping from an aerial vehicle and getting shot at by a SWAT team member.

Bruttenholm then introduces the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, which he calls, “The line in the sand.” The video also reveals the BPRD’s headquarters, which are situated in a small shop. A montage showing snippets from the film ensues, showing, among other things, Hellboy and Alice battling soldiers and Hellboy’s Hand of Doom in action.

Milla Jovovich’s Nimue the Queen of Blood appears towards the end of the footage. “Sorry, did I interrupt,” Hellboy asks. “On the contrary. You have arrived just in time,” she responds. The footage ends with Hellboy emerging from a pit and wielding a flaming sword and wearing his a flaming crown.

The footage itself, which was initially described as a trailer before that remark was later walked back, is an NYCC exclusive, so there’s no telling when it might get a wider release.

While there’s still a lot unknown about the movie’s plot at this time, the movie will see Hellboy go up against Nimue the Queen of Blood. The film itself will be based on Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and artist Duncan Fegredo’s three miniseries, “Darkness Calls,” “The Wild Hunt” and “The Storm and the Fury.”

Hellboy was first played on the big screen by actor Ron Perlman in Guillermo Del Toro’s 2004 film Hellboy, and then again in the sequel, 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Although Marshall’s Hellboy was initially intended as a continuation of Del Toro’s series, the film eventually morphed into a reboot. In an interview last year, Del Toro seemingly gave the reboot his blessing, so there don’t appear to be any hard feelings.

Although Hellboy was originally slated for release in January 2019, Summit Entertainment announced last month that the film would instead release in April. A panel for the film was held at NYCC on Saturday.
