Infinity War Gets Extended Release in China

Avengers: Infinity War‘s record-breaking run in China has just been extended.

According to Deadline, China granted Avengers: Infinity War an official extension, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster now in theaters across the country until July 9. The Avengers sequel was originally scheduled to be phased out of Chinese theaters by the end of this weekend before it received this rare 30-day extension.

The shortened release time is part of a Chinese initiative to limit the amount of time foreign films occupy local theaters in favor of promoting Chinese domestic films. Extended theater runs for Hollywood films are rare in China, though not unprecedented. Last year, China granted extensions to Coco and Hacksaw Ridge as well as 2016’s Zootopia.

Infinity War has earned over $360 million in China alone and is poised to reach $370 by the end of the weekend, which means the MCU crossover has overtaken 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron as the most successful Marvel film in China. As of yesterday, Infinity War‘s total global box office stands at $1.97 billion and is expected to become the first ever summer blockbuster to reach $2 billion at the box office. With today’s extension in China, that milestone is all but guaranteed.

In theaters now, Avengers: Infinity War is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston and Josh Brolin.
