WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, in theaters now
Remember how, in Avengers: Infinity War, Benedict Wong’s apprentice to the Sorcerer Supreme seemed to disappear before things really got messy? Well, so did everyone else, and this apparent “ghosting” has spawned a hilarious series of memes online.
The images in question depict Wong in a defensive stance, accompanied by various excuses to explain his absence.

Perhaps even funnier, though, is this mashup of both the Wong meme and the equally popular Spider-Man meme, which makes light of the web-slinger’s heartbreaking death in Infinity War.

Of course, the in-film explanation for Wong’s minimal screen time is that he remains in Greenwich Village to protect the Sanctum Sanctorum in Doctor Strange’s absence. Admittedly, though, it’s far more fun to pretend he simply “ghosted” Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to avoid fighting the Mad Titan Thanos.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie.
