Disney has signed Jon Favreau to write and executive produce a live-action Star Wars series for its upcoming streaming service, expected to kick-off in late-2019. A launch date for the Star Wars show has yet to be revealed.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

It was revealed in November that Rian Johnson will be creatively overseeing a new trilogy of Star Wars films — the first of which, he will write and direct. “We all loved working with Rian on ‘The Last Jedi,’” Kennedy said in a statement. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft ‘The Last Jedi’ from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

Disney’s Bob Iger also announced in late 2017 that there are series in the works for the streaming service based on Pixar’s Monsters Inc., the Disney Channel’s High School Musical franchise and an original series from Marvel.
