Kevin Feige Says Black Panther's Budget Was Larger Than Civil War

Marvel Studios knew it had a hit on its hands with the release of Black Panther, and set out to make the film a success by giving it a large budget, surpassing other Marvel Cinematic Universe origin movies such as Doctor Strange and Ant-Man, along with the ensemble film, Captain America: Civil War.

“The budget for Black Panther was bigger than Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, and you can’t do that without the support and encouragement from the leaders of the company,” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told Deadline at the 10th Annual PGA Produced By Conference.

Feige would go on to say that part of the $1.3 billion dollar success of the Ryan Coogler film was Marvel Studios “wanted to destroy the myth that black movies don’t work well around the world,” with Disney’s backing making that possible through smart marketing.

Another overlooked aspect of what made Black Panther a success had to do with Coogler bringing in his own diverse team to help flesh out the King of Wakanda’s visual world.

Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as N’Jadaka/Erik “Killmonger” Stevens, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Forest Whitaker as Zuri and Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue. It is currently available on digital, Blu-ray and DVD.
