The Disney California Adventure park will be closing A Bug’s Land on Tuesday in order to make room for a new area dedicated to Marvel superheros.

Based on the 1998 Pixar film A Bug’s Life, A Bug’s Land opened in 2002, featuring such rides and attractions as Flik’s Flyers, Francis’ Ladybug Boogie, Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train and the It’s Tough to Be a Bug! 3-D show. These attractions will be closing along with the section of the park, according to ABC7 (a subsidiary of Disney).

While many long-time parkgoers will likely be sad to see this established section of California Adventure go, this move isn’t terribly surprising. After all, it has been two decades since A Bug’s Life was released and, save for A Bug’s Land, Disney has done very little with the property since. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios’ films have been a massive part of Disney’s product for the better part of the last decade.

Moreover, the ride Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! currently resides just outside the entrance to A Bug’s Land, meaning that the rebranding would already make sense geographically. Also, this is only the latest example of Disney shaking things up at California Adventure.

Paradise Pier was recently changed to Pixar Pier (with the California Screamin’ roller coaster becoming the Incredicoaster in the process), Soarin’ Over California became Soarin’ Over the World and the Hollywood Tower of Terror ride was converted into the aforementioned Guardians of the Galaxy attraction. With that in mind, it was only a matter of time before A Bug’s Land received the overhaul treatment as well.

Disney California Adventure’s new Marvel-themed location is slated to open in 2020.
