Maverick Eyeing a Summer Production Start Date

Movies

Until recently, Tom Cruise was in the running for the secondary male lead role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. However, as Cruise is currently preparing to jump into Top Gun 2 (aka Top Gun: Maverick), it seems the concurrent summertime filming schedules have caused a conflict. Because of this, filming for Top Gun: Maverick is slated to begin by July.

The sequel to Top Gun will explore Maverick’s role in today’s military and already has Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Only The Brave) attached to the picture.

The sequel film was first announced last year when Cruise was promoting his ill-fated The Mummy reboot that was originally intended to launch the Dark Universe film series. Cruise later went on to reveal that key members from the original film would return for the sequel, like composer Harold Faltermeyer.

Following Top Gun: Maverick, it’s likely Cruise will move on to Edge of Tomorrow 2, which will reunite the actor with Emily Blunt. Edge of Tomorrow 2 is slated to begin filming in either late 2018 or early 2019.

Debuting in theaters on July 12, 2019, Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise and is rumored to be directed by Joseph Kosinski.
