Mission: Impossible Director Responds to Man of Steel 2, Green Lantern Corps Rumors

Despite showing a lack of interest in directing a superhero movie earlier this month, Mission: Impossible – Fallout writer/director Christopher McQuarrie appears to have warmed to the idea, providing there’s a good story in place. Having directed Man of Steel star Henry Cavill in the upcoming sixth film in the Mission: Impossible franchise, McQuarrie has been rumored to be stepping behind the camera for Cavill’s second solo outing as Superman in Man of Steel 2. McQuarrie is also a frequent collaborator of Tom Cruise, who’s rumored to be in the hunt for the role of Hal Jordan in a Green Lantern Corps film.

McQuarrie was asked about these rumors in an interview with Screenrant while promoting Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and while he gave vague answers, he did not completely shut them down. “To me, I’m interested in a good story,” McQuarrie said of directing Man of Steel 2. “That’s really what it is. I mean, when Man of Steel came up, it was because somebody had asked me, did I want to work with Henry again? Which I would in a second. I go through the door that opens.”

As for directing Cruise in a Green Lantern Corps film, McQuarrie revealed they’ve not discussed that particular project, though they do frequently talk about their next projects, as indicated by their involvement in seven films together. “You know, I got to say, Tom and I have never talked about it,” McQuarrie said. “We always kind of talk about what we’re working on or what we’re talking about working on next. I think, again, I think if you show them a good story, I think if you showed him a really emotional story, I don’t think, you know, it’s, I can never predict. I can never predict what it is he’s going to be drawn to.”

While McQuarrie has previously been involved in the X-Men franchise with uncredited writing ties for Bryan Singer’s X-Men and James Mangold’s The Wolverine, after being involved in Twitter arguments with toxic members of the Star Wars fandom, McQuarrie declared himself “cured” of the desire to make a film in that universe while also closing the door on superhero films. Based on his comments now, that door may have been reopened.

Man of Steel 2 has been rumored to release in 2020, although there remains no script or director attached to the project. Details for the Green Lantern Corps film are equally as scarce, with the film is also slated for release in 2020 based on reports from last year.
