New Bumblebee Movie Poster Places the Focus On Friendship

Comic-Con International in San Diego may not have given us a new trailer for the Transformers spin-off film Bumblebee, but what people were in attendance during the movie’s panel did get to see the debut of actual scenes from the film. While these scene weren’t released to the general public, word came out from the panel that the film was a departure from all previous Transformers entries in the franchise.

It’s said that Bumblebee is meant to be a quieter affair, with less Decepticon villains and a whole lot more of heart thanks to the emotional crux of the film, the relationship between the friendly yellow Autobot and his human companion Charlie, played by Hailee Steinfeld. We already got a sense that the two characters would be the heart of the film in the movie’s official trailer, but now we get even further confirmation thanks to the release of a new poster of the December-bound film, courtesy of Paramount UK’s Twitter account.

The new poster puts the focus on the friendship between the two characters, by showing them forming a bond under a night sky filled with stars. Putting aside explosions and destruction and focusing on quiet beauty also echoes a fairytale-like quality to the film, which once again draws comparisons to one of Bumblebee‘s inspirations, director Brad Bird’s animated movie, The Iron Giant. The tagline on the poster reads “Every adventure has a beginning,” which is meant to remind fans that this is an origin story for everyone’s favorite Autobot.

However, the caption which accompanies the tweet reads “Every friendship has a beginning,” which reinforces the idea that Bumblebee is truly built around the bond between human and Transformer — something that we know fuels the entire franchise. It was actually Transformers executive producer Steven Spielberg’s idea to have this new film built around the friendship of the Autobot and a female human companion, something that would change things up from all previous entries in the franchise, while finally bringing in a strong female lead — something that Transformers 1 through 5 aren’t exactly known for.
