Aside from the death toll in Avengers: Infinity War, one of the movie’s biggest surprises was the reintroduction of Captain America’s former nemesis, the Red Skull, albeit in a far different role than he held when he debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Skull, who vanished after attempting to wield the Tesseract in The First Avenger, appears on the planet Vormir as guardian of the Soul Stone and the man who informs Thanos of the sacrifice he must make if he wants to attain the cosmic artifact. However, actor Ross Marquand, who took the role over from Hugo Weaving, is uncertain if he’ll be back for the Infinity War sequel.

“I don’t know,” he told Entertainment Weekly regarding whether his character will return in Avengers 4. “I can’t speak to that, and I think that I would obviously love to replay that role again anytime. It’s such a rich character, especially now that he’s gone to this intergalactic hellscape and he’s found his own prison there…”

“[H]e’s a changed man, and I don’t even know if he is a man anymore,” the actor continued. “He’s almost like this ghostlike deity, and he’s at the service of the Soul Stone now, and his sole purpose is to essentially guide people to this, but you have to wonder: Is there still a part of him that does have ambition?

“I don’t know. It would be really cool to see where that character goes. But that’s really a question for all the folks at Marvel and the Russo brothers and the writers. I certainly couldn’t speak to that.”

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin. The film is out in theaters now.
