The prequel is coming. The recently announced Game of Thrones prequel is set to begin filming in Belfast in October. After months of looking at a variety of options to follow up on their hit drama, HBO gave the go-ahead to the prequel series written by Jane Goldman, and it looks like fans won’t have to wait long to see it.
According to the Belfast Telegraph, the staff at the Paint Hall studios in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter have been briefed that the fantasy prequel will be the next major project on their plate. The original series has filmed in Northern Ireland since 2011, in a variety of locations, though Paint Hall has served as its main studio. The spinoff will be set a thousand years before the events of HBO’s hit fantasy drama and will have an entirely different cast than the original.

The eighth and final season of Games of Thrones will be air in 2019, although an official premiere date has yet to be announced. Fans have been speculating about the ending of the award-winning series since the finale of the penultimate season earlier this year. With filming starting to wrap on the series, and cast members beginning to post their goodbyes as they finish their characters’ stories, fans are poring over the smallest of details for clues about the ending.
Since few details have been released thus far about the prequel, fans will be clamoring to hear more news over the next few months, especially in the form of casting notices and announcements about the plot details of the show.
Audiences are not the only ones excited about the announcement. The original series has brought in millions of pounds to the local economy, and the spinoff is sure to provide a boost as well. “This is fantastic news for everyone at the studio – from the cast and the crew, right down to the riggers and the catering staff,” stated a source at Paint Hall.
