The era of Stephen King shows no signs of slowing. With Hulu’s Castle Rock debuting July 25, and the second part It slated for release next year, we have yet another King horror film to look forward to. This one derives from a collaboration between King and his son, author Joe Hill (Locke and Key), called In the Tall Grass.
Netflix has bought the rights to the 2012 novella co-written by King and Hill. James Marsden (X-Men, Westworld) is in talks to star, with Vincenzo Natali (Cube) tapped to direct from a script he wrote.
The story follows a pair of close siblings, Becky and Cal, who take a road trip to their aunt and uncle’s home after Becky discovers she is pregnant and needs to take time out from college. After visiting some roadside attractions, the two stop at a field of tall grass when they hear a child, Tobin, calling for help. His mother’s voice in the grass appears to also be searching for him, and the siblings enter the field to help track him down. However, the grass isn’t what it appears, and they find themselves in an unending maze of terror where something pursues them.

In the Tall Grass sounds like the sort of single-setting, psychological horror King is known for, and those who have read Hill know his particular brand of horror skews a bit edgier. Still, both incorporate strong relationships in their stories, and those who enjoyed the mostly static setting of Netflix’s Gerald’s Game likely will be drawn to this latest adaptation.
Filming is set to begin this summer in Toronto.
