It sounds like the third season of Stranger Things will look to classic films from 1985 to match the time period.
While commenting on his recent Emmy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Sheriff Jim Hopper in Season 2 of the hit Netflix series, actor David Harbour revealed the upcoming season’s influences.

“I would go look at the great films that were released in ’85, of which there were many, and just go down that list and think of the possibilities that we could be going with,” explained Harbour in an interview with Deadline. “I think it is a specific season to 1985, and so you’ll see references to that.”
While set in the 1980s, the supernatural drama series has followed the passage of real-time with the first season taking place in November 1983 and the second season set in October 1984. The third season, which began production in April, is expected to be set in mid-1985. While the first season had been inspired by the works of Stephen King and the second by the films of Steven Spielberg, Harbour observed things will go in a different direction for Season 3.

“We’re experimenting a lot this season, and we’re taking risks, and I hope that they pay off but they are risks,” continued Harbour. “We’re going into territories we’ve never been to before, and it’s exciting.”
Here’s to hoping the third season of Stranger Things will be full of references to Back to the Future and Rocky IV.
