The Stephen King adaptations just keep on coming, with his 1973 short story The Boogeyman now in development at 20th Century Fox. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) are set to write the screenplay.
Originally published in 1973 Cavalier magazine before being collected 1978 as part of King’s Night Shift, The Boogeyman centers on a man who lost his children to a monster that lurks in their closet.

It joins a long list of King works making their way through Hollywood, which only lengthened following the blockbuster success of It. In addition the the anthology series Castle Rock, debuting next month on Hulu, there’s also It: Chapter Two, The Gingerbread Girl, Sleeping Beauties, The Stand and Doctor Sleep.

The Boogeyman was previously adapted as a short film nearly 10 times due to non-exclusive rights options for filmmakers who couldn’t afford the full price. This deal between Fox and 21 Laps marks the first big-budget adaptation of the story. No director has been attached, but the film will be produced by 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen.
