After Avengers 4, Marvel Will Reveal More About Its Movie Plans

Although Marvel Studios has revealed relatively few details about its plans for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that will change next year with the release of Avengers 4.

At a weekend press event for Ant-Man and The Wasp, President Kevin Feige referred to a number of ideas that marketing department has for the unveiling the upcoming film slate, but specified it would not be until after Avengers 4 that the studio will be able to be “less cagey about it.”

For now, Feige insisted Marvel is just taking things one film at a time. He noted, “Between Captain Marvel finishing in two weeks, Spider-Man starting in two weeks, Avengers 4 post getting under way right now, releasing this movie… That’s keeping us busy over the next year.”

It’s important to note that Feige pointedly would not confirm any specific characters that would be used for future films, so anyone hoping for news about a Black Widow movie will be disappointed. He spoke of the enormous possibilities, character-wise, for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying, “There are a lot of potential characters that are among that list.”

However, it’s interesting to note that Feige gave a vague idea of where fans should look to for the future of the MCU, pointing out that, “The plan going forward is gonna be about making great film, as good a film as we can, one after another. How they connect, how they build up, it all goes back to the comics. Comics has done a good job. Infinity War was just one mega-event in the comics in the history of mega-events. So, who knows.”

In other words, it seems like Feige is suggesting that Marvel Studios will continue to mine the source material in terms of the many comic book mega-events that could still be adapted, like “The Kree/Skrull War,” “The Korvac Saga” and “Secret Invasion.” Things would, of course, be a whole lot wider in terms of available material if the Fox/Disney deal were to go through and Marvel Studios would have access to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, especially the cosmic storylines that would be available once they had access to the villains related to the Fantastic Four like Galactus, Annihilus and Kang. Possible storylines for the future movies could be “The Coming of Galactus,” Avengers Forever and the Annihilation crossover event.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers 4 arrives May 3, 2019.
