SNL Skit Wonders How Star Wars Characters Speak So Many Languages

TV

The biggest mystery of Star Wars isn’t the origins of Supreme Leader Snoke, or even Luke Skywalker’s actual plan for saving Han Solo in Return of the Jedi, but rather how every character in that galaxy far, far away can seemingly understood chirping droids, roaring Wookiees and an assortment of other aliens, all without the assistance of translators. A digital short from this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live, which was unfortunately cut for time, set out to confront that issue, amid a hail of blaster fire.

In “Star Warriors,”  director J.J. Abrams introduces an “exclusive” first look at the planned summer 2019 movie The Mos Eisley Five: A Star Wars Story, starring Mikey Day, host Charles Barkley, and Kate McKinnon.

Accompanied by a Wookiee and R2 unite, the group negotiates with the Jabba-like Goba (Kenan Thompson) to free a Poe Dameron-esque Resistance pilot (Pete Davidson). The “talks,” as it were, leave Barkley’s character confused, as he can’t speak anything but a few words of alien tongue.

No matter how much you love Star Wars, you have to admit the way characters can understand each other doesn’t quite make sense. Yes, it’s a hallmark of the franchise now, but it’s certainly one of the more head-scratching hallmarks.

The next actual Star Wars movie, director Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. They’re joined by Thandie Newton as Val, Phoebe Waller-Bridge L3-37, Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos and Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett. The film hits theaters on May 25.
