Star Wars: Episode IX Gets a New Working Title

Movies

Star Wars: Episode IX has changed its working title, the codename the film operates under during production. Last year, it was revealed that the film was operating under the working title of “Black Diamond,” now it appears that name has been dropped in favor of another.

The new working title for Star Wars: Episode IX, according to Fantha Tracks, is “trIXie.” For those concerned about spoilers, you needn’t be worried. Working titles are almost exclusively codenames with little bearing on the plot of the film in question, and this one seems to reference only the film’s corresponding number.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was originally given the working title of “Los Alamos,” while Star Wars: The Last Jedi was known as “Space Bear” during production. Considering that the closest thing to a space bear in The Last Jedi was the seemingly omnipresent Porgs, it’s likely that “trIXie” is an equally inconsequential title… but that would be pretty tricksy, wouldn’t it?

The third Star Wars film in the current trilogy is slated to be directed by J. J. Abrams and follow up on Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. That film saw the death of both Supreme Leader Snoke, the main antagonist from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and longtime series protagonist Luke Skywalker. Star Wars: Episode IX will release in theaters on Dec. 20, 2019.
