Topher Grace Gives Tom Hardy’s Venom His Seal of Approval

Topher Grace may have helped to introduce Eddie Brock to the big screen in 2007 with Spider-Man 3, but the actor is willing to admit that Tom Hardy better embodies the character in the trailers for Sony’s Venom.

“To me — I truly mean this — I think Tom is the guy to play that role,” he told Inverse while promoting his new project, director Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. “I’m thrilled to watch it as a fan. I really mean that. I think he’s just the best dude.”

An avid Spider-Man comics reader as a kid, Grace acknowledged his own wiry frame hardly resembled the brawny Eddie Brock from the Marvel Comics source material. “I was thrilled because I was such a fan of the character, but I was aware of how it was different from what I had grown up reading,” he acknowledged. “I thought it was cool, but I’m really excited to see [Tom Hardy’s version]. That’s the character I grew up with.”

While a financial success for Sony, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 wasn’t received as well by fans and critics as the previous two installments in the franchise. Since then, the film has become the butt of jokes, spawning countless memes starring Tobey Maguire’s “emo” dancing Peter Parker, as well as Grace himself.

Grace previously defended Raimi, insisting that, “on a whole, he did such a fantastic job” with the Spider-Man trilogy.
